BARCELONA, SPAIN

Arrive Barcelona, Spain in the morning. Orchestra will be met by members of Barcelona Rotary Clubs.


Accommodations for 3 nights.


Barcelona, capital of the province of the same name, is an ancient city originating from before the Roman domination. It is a beautifully laid out city and its port is among the foremost in the Mediterranean.


Enjoy a tour of Spain’s second city and principal seaport, which may include visits to its unusual 14th century Cathedral; the old city with its Roman walls; the 200 foot high Columbus Monument; the ancient University of Barcelona; the beautiful Las Ramblas, a principal avenue with double rows of trees; the 14th century Town Hall, and Parque Guell.

Gather in the morning for a full orchestra rehearsal.


In the afternoon, additional sightseeing in Barcelona.


In the evening, LIYO gives its first concert of the tour, an American Independence Day concert benefiting Rotary Club charities.

BARCELONA, SPAIN

In the morning, LIYO chamber groups will be available to perform at local youth, community and senior centers.


In the afternoon, enjoy an excursion to the colorful Costa Brava, north of Barcelona, adjoining the Mediterranean Sea. Visit quaint towns and there will be an opportunity to swim in the Mediterranean Sea.


Dinner in local restaurant.

MALLORCA, SPAIN

Transfer to the airport for a short flight to the island of Mallorca. Meeting and welcome by members of the local Rotary Club.


Accommodations at a resort hotel for 3 nights.


Mallorca is known as the “Peaceful Isle”, where nature deposited so much beauty and so many attractions. In the afternoon, enjoy a tour of the historic city of Palma, which will include its magnificent Cathedral, Bellver Castle, Almudaina Palace, and the Lonja, among other points of interest.

MALLORCA, SPAIN

Enjoy a morning tour of the island featuring beautiful coastal scenery

Quint country villages.


During the course of the tour, LIYO chamber groups will give short performances at the Sanctuary of Father Serra, a missionary who founded famous missions in California, in the 17th and 18th centuries.


Balance of afternoon available for beach going or visiting the city of Palma in organized groups.


Evening gathering with young Mallorcan musicians.

A relaxing morning at the resort.


In the afternoon, transfer to the concert hall for a full orchestra rehearsal.


In the evening, LIYO presents a major performance by full orchestra, benefitting local Rotary Club charities.

GRANADA, SPAIN

Transfer to airport for morning flight to Malaga. Upon arrival, transfer to the historic city of Granada.


Accommodations for 3 nights.


Granada’s romantic setting and the unusual beauty of its background, make Granada a completely distinctive city, a city whose every feature is an aesthetic attraction.


In the afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Granada which will include the famed Alhambra, the Generalife with its wonderful gardens and fountains, the Royal Chapeland Museum, as well as the 11th century fortress situated on a hill overlooking the city and gardens.

In the morning there will be organized free time for strolling through the streets of old Granada.


In the afternoon, LIYO will hold an afternoon rehearsal at the concert hall.


In the evening, LIYO presents a major concert, again sponsored by the local Rotary Club and benefitting Rotary Club charities.

GRANADA, SPAIN

Sleep late if desired and a late breakfast.


In the late morning drive high up into the Sierra Mountains, which dominate Granada, for spectacular views of the surrounding areas.

In the evening there will be social activities with typical local music and musicians, sponsored by local hosts.

Early morning departure for drive along Spain’s colorful Costa del Sol to the southern city of Algeciras.


The orchestra crosses the Straits of Gibraltar by ferry to the city of Tangiers, Morocco. New coaches take the orchestra south to the ancient city of Fez.


Accommodations for 2 nights.

FEZ, MOROCCO

Fez is the most ancient and impressive of Morocco’s 5 imperial cities. Built in the 8th century, it has more history and mystery than anywhere else in Morocco. It is still considered Morocco’s most important intellectual , cultural and religious center.


In the morning, a guided tour of the highlights of Fez will show tour members the old and new medinas, including visits to the world’s cultural treasures. The tour also allows photo stops at the imposing gate of Bad Boujloud, the splendid fountain at Palais Nejjarine, the ancient ramparts and the beautiful front entrance of the Royal Palace.


Afterwards, several hours to relax and enjoy your hotel’s pool.


In the evening, after a short rehearsal, the orchestra will present a performance sponsored by both the Rotary Club and a Moroccan-American friendship organization.

FEZ/MEKNES/

CASABLANCA, MOROCCO

Leave Fez by coach in the morning. Midday lunch stop at the historic city of Meknes, the imperial city built by Moulay Ismail, with many palaces, mosques, fountains, terraces, gardens, stables and shops that give access to the wonders of the city. The countryside around Meknes is the delightful, lush and peaceful.


Later in the afternoon, continue south and arrive in Casablanca in the early evening.


Accommodations for 2 nights (possible family stays for LIYO members with members of the Rotary Clubs. Balance of the evening to be spent with families to enjoy local hospitality).

CASABLANCA, MOROCCO

Orchestra reassembles in the morning for a tour of Casablanca.


Casablanca, is Morocco’s largest city and its most important port. It is considered the financial capital of the country. A modern metropolis, Casablanca still retains much of the old Moroccan traditions in its medina.



After some local visits to historic sites, the orchestra gathers at the concert hall for a sound-check and short rehearsal.


An early evening concert by the full orchestra, followed by dinner and reception.

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO

Bid farewell to families and drive south to the imperial city of Marrakech, arriving by midday.


Accommodations in a hotel for 3 nights.


Marrakech, in its line of beauty, has dynasties of sages, craftsmen, architects, painters and sculptors of all ages that have built palaces, mosques, gardens and Koranic schools. For all the beauty gathered here in one thousand years, for the sheer joy of the senses, you cannot miss Marrakech.


Afternoon orientation tour of Marrakech.


Dinner in the hotel and a relaxing evening to practice, socialize with friends or swim in the hotel pool.

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO

Full day excursion into the desert and to the Atlas Mountains.

Drive from Marrakech over the Haouz Plain towards Lake Lalia Takerkoust. The area surrounding the lake is spectacular with the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. Continue to a large Berber village built on the side of the mountains and then take a smaller road to visit

remote Berber villages with breathtaking mountain scenery. L


Return to Marrakech late in the day.

Market day in Marrakech: The group will visit the colorful local markets, offering all manner of food, clothing and local handicrafts.


Afternoon free in organized groups in Marrakech.


Early dinner followed by transfer to concert site. After a brief rehearsal, LIYO gives its final performance in Morocco, for the benefit of local charities.

Transfer to airport for the short flight by chartered aircraft to Tenerife, Canary Islands. Drive to Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife’s capital and one of Spain’s oldest cities.


Accommodations close to all activities and outstanding Atlantic beaches for 4 nights.

TENERIFE, CANARY ISLANDS

Tenerife is an idyllic island paradise which, although set far out into the Atlantic in the Canary Islands, is actually a part of Spain.


During our time in Tenerife, local sightseeing will be arranged, as will an excursion to 12,000 ft. high Teide, Tenerife’s snow covered peak in the tropics.


Time for swimming and to enjoy local entertainment.


During this period, LIYO chamber groups will play for local institutions as requested by local municipal sponsors.


On the evening of the 22nd, LIYO gives its major performance in the grand ballroom of one of the island’s major hotels, once again for local charities.

TENERIFE, CANARY ISLANDS / FUNCHAL, MADIERA

Transfer to Puerto de la Cruz pier and board a modern ferry of the Naviera Armas Line. Enjoy a full day cruise northward on this well equipped ship with facilities for games, films, relaxing comfortably on deck and enjoying lunch and dinner.


Arrive at Funchal, Madiera in the evening.


Accommodations for 3 nights (possible family stays, subject to confirmation).

FUNCHAL, MADIERA

Morning tour of Funchal and vicinity.


Called “The Pearl of the Atlantic,” Madeira is a lush and mountainous paradise and the jewel in the Madeira Islands crown. Formed by volcanic eruptions long ago, the island offers adventure options galore. Offshore, the blue water is so deep that whales sometimes swim near land. Funchal, the capital, is home to 100,000 people, a unique culture and attractions like the 15th century Sé (Cathedral) and Museu da Quinta das Cruzes. A scenic morning tour will be arranged.


Afternoon gathering of local children as LIYO members present an informal workshop and light performance.


Evening social gathering featuring entertainment by local musicians using original instruments and dancers, also featuring short solo performances by LIYO members.

A wonderful day to enjoy pool swimming anad time with possible host family groups on their day off.


Orchestra reassembles late in the day for a warm up and to present a full performance for the public. Dinner and reception to follow.

A final morning for browsing and souvenir hunting before transferring to Funchal Airport.


Flight late in the afternoon by scheduled airline to the mainland.


Arrive Lisbon, Portugal in the evening.


Meeting by local Rotary club sponsors and accommodations in hotel for 4 nights.

LISBON, PORTUGAL

Lisbon, situated on the right bank of the Tagus River, is a spectacular many-hued seaport city with steep, winding streets, offering excellent views of Portugal’s capital and of the 732-foot Christ the King monument across the river.


A morning tour of Lisbon may include the historic Tower of Belem, the Monastery of St. Jerome, the Museum of Coaches, the ancient Alfama section, Prace do Comercio, Avenida da Liberdada, Park of Eduardo VII, the bullfight arena, Campo Pequenho, and modern quarters.


Mid-afternoon visit to a local hospital for performances by LIYO chamber groups.


Evening dinner with local entertainment. Possibility of enjoying a typical

Portuguese “fado”.

LISBON, PORTUGAL / SINTRA, ESTORIL and CASCAIS

Full day excursion to the Portuguese Riviera. Visit Sintra, Estoril and Cascais.


In the morning, take part in an excursion to the city of Sintra, one of the oldest Portuguese towns and formerly the summer retreat of the royal family. Taken from the Moors in 1147, Sintra boasts three palaces, the oldest of which is the Moorish fortress now in ruins, perched above the town at 1,350 feet above sea level. Visit the National Palace which was the summer residence of the royal family with its Swan Room, the Siren’s Room and the Magpie Room.


Afterwards, stroll through glittering Estoril along the Portuguese Riviera, well-equipped to provide entertainment to the holidaymaker.

Time for last minute souvenir hunting and visits to sites of interest by organized small groups.


After relaxing at the hotel , transfer to the concert hall where LIYO gives its final full performance of the tour for the benefit of local Rotary Club charities.


After the concert, LIYO will enjoy its traditional farewell dinner and a party at a colorful local venue.
